Provia 100F + Ektachrome 100 4x5 Sheet Film, 2020

I recorded the color positive pieces of film for Utah while on my honeymoon in October of 2020. This body of work captures not only sublime landscapes, but also a time of great change and personal growth. Needless to say, 2020 was far from ideal and threw the world for a loop. Fortunately, the worst I encountered was a change of wedding plans. As opposed to the 250 person, elaborate Newport event that we originally planned, we had an intimate New Hampshire backyard wedding. It ended up being better than we thought possible, and for our honeymoon, we decided to visit Utah and see parts of our country that we hadn't originally planned on seeing.

While in Utah, we were able to explore over five National Recreational Areas. After six months of being cooped up due to Covid-19, there was no better way to reset and reground than seeing the best Mother Nature has to offer. My husband and I found it extremely therapeutic being out there, averaging 15 miles a day while at the parks. Photographing these landscapes with the 4x5 process forced me to stop and take everything in. Surrounded by that vastness and beauty, I deeply reflected on the world as a whole, and how I fit into it. I could not ignore the comparison of my fleeting human existence to the permanence of these extraordinary landscapes. What have these spaces seen? Who or what has been here before me? What will these places look like 1000 years from now?

Utah is a reminder to get out and see as much of the world as I can in the ~60 years i have left on it. It is also a reminder of our responsibility as human beings to take care of and respect these lands that were here long before us. We need to preserve them so they can continue to enrich the human experience of generations to come. Utah is currently a work in progress.
