A Mix of 120 Film Scans and Silver Gelatin Prints, 2018

A photo essay made over the course of 10 days spent in Havana, Cuba. The leaders of our countries have long misunderstood one another, but the inhabitants do not. Almost all of the people I met and photographed approached me to exchange ideas and engage in conversation. It prompted me to think about the idea of being a neighbor. They are our neighbors directly to the south, but how far do the boundaries of neighbors expand? In the grand scheme of things, Cuba is about as close as you can get to America. This is extremely evident in the interesting Art Deco flair that has been preserved in the city. I felt like I was traveling back in time, which made me feel as though we left our neighbors in the past, as opposed to working together to make the whole neighborhood better. I hope for the sake of both of our nations that there is a future in which these two culturally rich countries can freely exchange ideas.
